Behind the Times

Updates from 2015.  Ground Hog Day!  Is it never too late to blog an update from the previous year?  Well too bad, Bubba’s been busy.  What a year though, awards and schwag for Aravaipa Running in AZ, novelty growlers for Horsehead’s Brewing in NY, loads of banded tankards for UncommonGoods catalog, mead ware (goblets & growlers) for Arktos Meadery in MI, more rounds for Weasel Boy in Zanesville, 25th anniversary cups for the S.N.O.B.s (Society of Northeastern Ohio Brewers), commemorative cups for the Master Brewers Association meeting in Jacksonville, Fl, and of course all the retail customers and custom orders from Etsy.  2016 is starting off strong as well.  Looking forward to polishing up the brand for wholesaling to beer-tiques and beer enthusiast places that seem to be popping up everywhere.  I will also be adding more videos of my process as the year moves on and maybe even hitting the blog more often.  We’ll see.  Leaving you this time with the song that jumped into my head as soon as I realized what day it was:

Weasel Boy Buys Another Round

Long time no post.  That means its time to get into the blog post time machine and take a look back at some of the highlights and great customers from this year.  Our first stop is Weasel Boy Brewing Co. in Zanesville, OH.  Lori and Jay Wince are big fans of all things hand crafted and had worked with local potters in the past for Weasel Boy’s mug club. They recognized the potential for custom logo work with BJBC and put in an initial order for 16 oz. pilsner cups.  Those first 40 cups sold out in a matter of weeks leading up to Christmas 2013, which lead to re-orders throughout the year: 20 oz. tankards, 12 oz, goblets and most recently a round of 20 oz. banded pilsners.  Look for the Weasel Boy clay medallion 2014 Christmas ornament to arrive soon!  It has been a great pleasure working with those guys this year and I am looking forward to all the new possibilities.Group shot of Weasel Boy cupsIt does make me wonder though, what would a werewolf order if it strolled into Weasel Boy on a Friday night with it’s hair all perfect?

Bubba Jones at the VI in Gambier, Ohio

Pilsner cups and a 54oz. bottle top growler

When the good folks down at the Village Inn heard about Bubba Jones Brew cups they jumped at the chance to be our first customer.  One of the owners, Jerry Kelly, selected a pitcher sized, 54oz. bottle top growler and the 16oz. pilsner cups.  BJBC developed a custom purple glaze for the Kenyon College crowd and contrasted that with the cascade green and wheat glaze combination that seems to be working well.  Their company logo shows up well with the silicone stamp process.

If you stop in on a Saturday night to mingle with the lively crowd or check out the local live music scene; ask Nate to pour you one of their local micro brew selections and be adventurous with the menu.  Bubba’s choice was the Smokehouse Burger with the Pilsner from Homestead Beer Co.  Might just have to become a regular.

Time to hit the road.  Remember to be master of your cups.  I’ll leave you with one of my new favorites “Hang Loose” by Alabama Shakes.  Think Chuck Berry and Aretha Frankilin’s grand daughter :

Cup forms just off the wheel with no handles yet.

Which one is Pink?

Adventures in Brew Cupping begin!  Welcome to the page and hope you take the time to look around and get in touch.  In a business where each piece is unique and every order is inherently custom it is difficult, maybe, impossible to create a one size fits all clickable catalog that streamlines your internet buying experience.  That said, I have attempted to create a starting point by featuring some basic cup forms and glaze styles on the Order Page.  Bubba Jones Brew Cups is all about creating wheel thrown stoneware cups with a hand pulled handle and your custom logo.  From the hands of a trained potter to the hands of the end user, these methods contribute an authentic quality drinking experience.

I’m looking forward to adding additional posts about each BJBC customer, including images of the cups and a little bit about the atmosphere of the various establishments, companies and organizations.  If you subscribe you can expect product updates on the “and More” of BJBC including things like custom ceramic tap pulls and wooden products like beer flights from The Real Co. in St. Louis, MO.  There will also be fun stuff such as play lists of the songs that are in my head at the time or were actually playing while I was hanging out / delivering cups.

On that note I’ll leave you with the song “Have a Cigar” By Pink Floyd from their 1975 album, “Wish You Were Here”.  It chronicles the band’s rise to stardom and their deal with “The Man” who asks the question, “Oh, by the way, which one’s Pink?”  He thinks one of the band members is actually named, “Pink Floyd”.  Reminds me of Bubba Jones.  Ironically, and unknown to me until this very moment, the vocals on the track are performed by English folk singer, Roy Harper, and not Roger Waters or David Gilmore.
